Strong winds can cause significant damage to even the strongest roofing systems, but how do we know that a roofing problem was actually caused by strong winds instead of something else? The following are common signs of wind damage that experts like us look out for when performing roof inspections.
Missing Shingles
The biggest sign of wind damage is your roof’s surface lacking a few shingles. Strong wind can literally blow individual shingles off the roofing system. This type of damage is serious since it exposes the underlayment and other more vulnerable components to the harsh elements.
Warped Flashing
Even if your roof managed to keep all of its shingles intact doesn’t mean that it’s completely safe from wind damage after a hurricane. Sometimes the wind could be just strong enough to bend or partially peel off the flashing strips without completely removing them. Roofing contractors like us can help spot wind-damaged flashing and have it fixed and resealed as soon as possible.
Gaps Between Seams
This type of issue is more common among metal roofs. If wind is strong enough to move metal, large panels can “catch air” and literally get pushed from below. The upward force can loosen bolts and fasteners, creating gaps along seems where individual panels meet.
Granules in the Gutter
This type of wind damage is actually a combination of two factors – an aging material and erosion. The top layer of asphalt shingles are made of small asphalt granules embedded in a base. Old shingles get weakened and constant exposure to wind and rainwater washes these granules off the shingle surfaces. If our roof inspectors find these granules in the gutters, we always recommend new shingles for the entire roofing system.
