Understanding the Basics of Roof Ventilation

A roofing project is not always about finding out the best type, color and brand of roofing material that the pros will install over your home. It is also about making sure the whole system is well-ventilated for it to be effective and function properly.

My Roofing has been providing top-notch residential roofing services in the area for many years now. Every roofing system we install, repair or replace will deliver the best results for our customers. We make sure to incorporate the necessary elements in each roof we work on, including ventilation.

About Roof Ventilation

Roof ventilation, whether it involves the entire attic or only the roof deck, plays an important role in ensuring indoor comfort, regardless of the season. In the winter, it helps maintain a cold roof temperature to avoid the occurrence of ice dams and to vent any moisture moving from the indoor space to the attic. In summer, it helps expel solar-heated hot air from the attic or roof to prevent air conditioning units from exerting too much energy.

Roof repair pros recognize that lack of ventilation can lead to comfort issues and roofing problems. Without it, heat gets trapped inside the home during hot weather, causing the attic to feel extremely uncomfortable. When this happens, the shingles may show signs of damage, which then shortens the system’s service life. During cold weather, excessive moisture may form in the attic, damaging the critical structural elements of the home that leads to the formation of black mold.

Various Types of Vents

A well-ventilated roofing system has any of these features present: soffit vents, baffles, and ridge vents. Soffit vents are perforated but are installed the same way as soffits and can either be continuous or fitted between rafter tails. Baffles are fitted between the rafters to allow fresh air to flow into the attic from the soffit vents. Ridge vents, as the name suggests, are located along the roof ridge to provide uniform airflow throughout the attic space.
