Wind Damage: Preparing Your Roof for Strong Winds

You shouldn’t worry too much about your roof when the wind starts to pick up. Metal roofing systems and most types of roofs are built to withstand the typical wind speeds in your area. So long as the wind speeds don’t exceed that the typical range, your roof should be fine.

If you find yourself constantly worrying about the state of your roof, you’ll be glad to know that there are a number of factors that can mitigate the damage from strong winds. Having an idea on how wind damages your roof might also help put your mind at ease.

My Roofing, one of the top residential roofing contractors in the state, elaborates below.

Direct Wind Damage

The extreme speeds and blunt force of storms and tornadoes are more than enough to damage even the sturdiest of roofing systems. The damage from everyday winds, on the other hand, would vary depending on the slope of your roof.

Winds blow past the surface of your roof in a straight direction; winds that do so uninterrupted are in a laminar flow. When they encounter a curve or depression, that state is disrupted and creates a vacuum that can pull in nearby objects.

If it happens that one of the shingles on your roof has been slightly loosened, it can get dislodged further, potentially starting a domino peel-off chain effect for the more vulnerable parts of your roof. You can prevent such a scenario from happening by having your roof undergo routine roof repair and maintenance.

Indirect Wind Damage

Debris that gets blown off and carried by the wind can also damage your roof. The damage ranges from relatively minor scratches to collapsed sections stemming from heavy debris. You can prevent indirect wind damage to your roof by trimming overhanging tree limbs.

More often than not, however, winds cause damage by worsening pre-existing minor damage on your roof. That’s why it’s important to have a qualified contractor routinely inspect your roof.

My Roofing is a roofing contractor with an A-plus rating from the Better Business Bureau. We offer residential roofing and gutter installation services.  To get a free consultation, call us at (817) 912-5500 or fill out this form.
